I'm back is just as hard as any Tip record and the fire and passion doesn't seem reignited, but as though it never went anywhere. At the end the Kang reminds us he's just getting warmed up... clearly its gonna be a hot summer.

We've been out the loop for a while, but in case you have yet to hear, Guru, 1/2 of Gangstarr lost his battle to cancer yesterday. The rapper, aged 43, wanted to keep his cancer private until he was able to beat it; unfortunately this was not the case. Gangstarr, made up of DJ Premier and Guru, was a prevalent hip hop group in the 80s and 90s highly known for their intellectual and conscious rhymes as well as sonic jazz influences. However, the group broke up in 2003.




Guru had some parting words in the following the letter:

I, Guru, am writing this letter to my fans, friends and loved ones around the world. I have had a long battle with cancer and have succumbed to the disease. I have suffered with this illness for over a year. I have exhausted all medical options.

I have a non-profit organization called Each One Counts dedicated to carrying on my charitable work on behalf of abused and disadvantaged children from around the world and also to educate and research a cure for this terrible disease that took my life. I write this with tears in my eyes, not of sorrow but of joy for what a wonderful life I have enjoyed and how many great people I have had the pleasure of meeting.

My loyal best friend, partner and brother, Solar, has been at my side through it all and has been made my health proxy by myself on all matters relating to myself. He has been with me by my side on my many hospital stays, operations, doctors visits and stayed with me at my home and cared for me when I could not care for myself. Solar and his family is my family and I love them dearly and I expect my family, friends, and fans to respect that, regardless to anybody's feelings on the matter. It is my wish that counts. This being said I am survived by the love of my life, my sun KC, who I trust will be looked after by Solar and his family as their own. Any awards or tributes should be accepted, organized approved by Solar on behalf myself and my son until he is of age to except on his own.

I do not wish my ex-DJ to have anything to do with my name likeness, events tributes etc. connected in anyway to my situation including any use of my name or circumstance for any reason and I have instructed my lawyers to enforce this. I had nothing to do with him in life for over 7 years and want nothing to do with him in death. Solar has my life story and is well informed on my family situation, as well as the real reason for separating from my ex-DJ. As the sole founder of GangStarr, I am very proud of what GangStarr has meant to the music world and fans. I equally am proud of my Jazzmatazz series and as the father of Hip-Hop/Jazz. I am most proud of my leadership and pioneering efforts on Jazzmatazz 4 for reinvigorating the Hip-Hop/Jazz genre in a time when music quality has reached an all time low. Solar and I have toured in places that I have never been before with GangStarr or Jazzmatatazz and we gained a reputation for being the best on the planet at Hip-Hop/Jazz, as well as the biggest and most influential Hip-Hop/Jazz record with Jazzmatazz 4 of the decade to now. The work I have done with Solar represents a legacy far beyond its time. And we as a team were not afraid to push the envelope. To me this is what true artists do! As men of honor we stood tall in the face of small mindedness, greed, and ignorance. As we fought for music and integrity at the cost of not earning millions and for this I will always be happy and proud, and would like to thank the million fans who have seen us perform over the years from all over the world. The work I have done with Solar represents a legacy far beyond its time and is my most creative and experimental to date. I hope that our music will receive the attention it deserves as it is some of the best work I have done and represents some of the best years of my life.

J. Cole on the Come Up

Firstly, I apologize for taking forever to put up this post, but it's also a post close to my heart. This year, I attended the Yale Black Solidarity Conference for a second time, and it was just as amazing as last year. (I strongly encourage every college student to go, it's great for networking). Anyway, J. Cole performed and it was ultimately amazing. Now maybe it's because I'm in love with hip hop or maybe it's the fact that I'm in love with J. Cole, but either way there was something about that concert that made me feel like my purpose in life was beyond just wanting to be involved in music; it's about inspiring others.



Anyway, I was able to meet J. Cole after the performance, and granted he hasn't dropped an album yet, but he's definitely one of the most humble cats out. Dude's mixtape is raw, (both of them, if you don't have The Come Up or The Warm Up I suggest you cop them now) and his flow is ridiculous if you didn't already know. He understands that there's still so much for him to accomplish, regardless of the fact that 90% of his audience can recite his verses back to him. Not to diss other cats that are out there right now with their Sprite commercials, I respect their hustle, but there's something bout J. Cole that has you begging for more. He comes with a different story every time. He's lyrically strong, diverse, and clever. And he doesn't come in a box. You can't market J. Cole in one aspect of hip hop. He's not trying to be the backpacker, the gangsta, the poet, the hustler, he's just him, J. Cole. I respect this dude's grind. If his mixtape didn't already confirm it, his performance, and my meeting him definitely did. J. Cole's on the come up, and though it may be a slow rise, he's gonna be on top for a LONG time.

Mos Def - Supermagic (Video)

Mos keeps it simple and natural with the visual for the intro to his album The Ecstatic, as he does with the music throughout the album. Give it a spin, because when I say simple I don't mean cheap or underwhelming in the slightest. It's well worth an Itunes purchase for its standout tracks including this one.

50 Cent feat. Governor - Do You Think About Me

50 Cent is in a constant struggle for relevancy because of his tendency to champion sensationalism over quality music, but that doesn't mean he's completely lost his step. Songs like "Do You Think About Me", with well executed, non cliche concepts and assured delivery save 50 Cent's last cd from being a weed plate. If 50 works to grow as an audience he might survive the dying Music industry's weeding out process. Plus the video, featuring Curtis' ex Vivica Fox, Tamala Jones, and Tahiry is dope conceptually, showing Fif's growing propensity to engage in the cinematic.
