What the World Lost Today...

My favorite album is "Dangerous". My favorite song is "Human Nature". Let's get the facts out the way: He's the best entertainer in the history of music. He is the King of Pop. He was a musical genius. His impact will never be forgotten.

Yes, this is a Michael Jackson tribute. But this is also very personal.

I'm not over it right now. I've watched the same headlines on MSNBC since it was confirmed at 6:27 PM. First it was TMZ, then LA Times, finally all the major networks. I'm still crying so forgive me if I'm not as coherent as I should be.

My first memories in life are of Michael. I know he was a part of my life before 1990, but my first concrete memories started when I would hear "Human Nature" before I went to sleep at the age of two. I first watched "Thriller" on MTV when I was four with my Grandma (yeah, I was scared) and that same year (1992) I watched The Jacksons: An American Dream on TV. In the morning before preschool, I would watch Jackson5 reruns on the CBS morning lineup. I spent play dates watching tapes of him in concert (no lie, we played Ninja Turtles and watched Michael, I swear). And the only reason I went to see Free Willy in 1993 was because Michael did the song for it (turned out to be a great movie though). "We Are the World" was our finale piece for dance class in 1994. Michael Jackson ruled the world when I just started to understand what the world was, so if you take him away, the world just doesn't make sense to me anymore.

To me, MJ embodied the ultimate human being. He rose to the top of the world, and when he got there, he gave back. Sure, I know Oprah and Bill Gates and countless others give back, but rather than just give back with money, Michael gave his career to his causes. He reached people using the outlet that mattered most to him: with his music. It just seems to me that the world was a better place in the early 90s. It was a better place because people cared about each other. And people cared about each other because of Michael Jackson. I listened to the Jackson 5 and his older music when I was younger, but you have to understand, that when I came into consciousness, Michael Jackson ruled the world. Thus it wasn't the "Rockin' Robins" and "ABCs" that shaped my life....it was the "They Don't Really Care About Us"'s and "Black and White"'s that became my childhood soundtrack. What separated him from the super-celebrities we know today is that he didn't rule with what runs TMZ today, or what he has been recently known for...there were no club fights, no weapons charges, and certainly no stepping out of cars without underwear. Ok, maybe there were hyperbaric sleeping chambers and a chimp named Bubbles, but that's not what I think of at first. I just have images in my mind of tens of thousands of people crowding around for what seemed like miles in front of one stage. Nobody was angry, hysterical maybe, and it seemed that if only for a moment, we could all get along.

That's the Michael I'll always have in my head. One icon, amidst a sea of people.

While his controversy has overshadowed his gifts in recent years, the 4 year old in me always understood Michael Jackson. He never wanted his childhood to end and he never wanted anyone to feel left out. At the root of it all, that was the essence of Michael: everyone in the world is important. Race, religion, gender, sexual orientation--I don't think any of those things mattered to MJ, and though this may be an unusual interpretation, that's always what I understood his physical body to represent. Sure you can make whatever jokes you'd like about aesthetics and behavior, but I think at the root of it all, everyone could relate to Michael because he represented everyone.

I don't want to summarize his life and importance to culture, music and the world. And I realize that he's been many things to many people. That's why I hope you take this time in the wake of his death to remember just what he's done for you. I haven't said all I'd like to say, and maybe this is where I'll stop and take the time to personally sort out music's role in my life from this point on. Today has been hard for me. I've lost the man that made music matter to me. The one person who made me realize that music is the most powerful vehicle for change in the world. If you know me, you know I'm very cynical, sarcastic and self-centered, but I didn't start out that way. I used to feel much more optimistic about the world and its inhabitants. And I can tell you that just from thinking back over my life with Michael Jackson's influence, I'm remembering and appreciating everything and everyone he stood for.

An icon is defined as a thing or person regarded as a representative symbol of something. To some, Michael Jackson is a representative symbol of music, but when I think of him, I see an endless sea of people. And today, they are missing their icon.

The music lives on.

May your influence continue to live on...

Michael Jackson (1958-2009) - King of Pop - R.I.P.

The world was dealt a tragic blow today as a man who has influenced us for the past 4 decades and will continue to influence us into the future passed away. Michael Jackson has meant a lot to me personally. My parents went to see him in concert in Germany while my mom was pregnant with me. I've sang the songs and done the dance moves, as we all have. I used to watch Moonwalker and Thriller on VHS until one of the tapes broke...

I grew up on his videos and songs, and as I got older I explored his music and dancing on a deeper level. I place his catalogue of music in a spot with few others. His music has been there when I was happy, as it has when I was feeling down, and anywhere in between; true mood music. People need to understand that without him there would be no "MTV". Black music would not be as accepted as it is now. He sold over 750 million records worldwide. He's had incalculable impact on people of all races, ages, nationalities and ethnicities. He opened so many doors....

It's hard to verbalize how I feel now. Ashley Dre was going to do this but couldn't for the same reasons I'm having trouble now. You were, and are an inspiration and I speak for all of your fans when I say we appreciate you. We will continue to celebrate your life and to uphold your legacy.

Rest In Peace Michael Jackson

NEWS: Chris Brown Pleads Guilty

Today Chris Brown pleaded guilty to once count of felony assault against ex-girlfriend, Rihanna in February. He entered the plea bargain at his preliminary hearing earlier this afternoon in L.A. The sentence included five years of probation and six months of community service. California law requires a check-in every three months to show progress.

In addition, Chris Brown was sentenced to a 50 yard "stay away" order from Rihanna since he has yet to begin his domestic violence classes. On August 5th, Brown will receive his formal sentence. Moments later, Rihanna was escorted into the courtroom to have the "stay away" order explained to her. However, the order will be shorter for professional events such as award shows, concerts, etc.

Mos Def- The Ecstatic

If you have yet to check it out, you should hit up Mos Def's new album THE ECSTATIC which dropped Tuesday. The album is no surprise, considering Mos Def's lyricisim, delivery, and creativity as he colloborates with producers such as the Chad Hugo, Madlib, and the late J Dilla. Some of his artist collaborations include Slick Rick, Georgia Anne Muldrow, and the timeless Talib Kweli. And Mos Def does prove his work to be timeless in this age of hip-hop where some people try entirely too hard to be different. Mos Def never tries to be anything he's not, and is always proud to stand behind the art he represents.

The album opens up with a clip from Malcolm X's renowned speech at Oxford University in 1964 on Mos Def's "Supermagic" track which serves as a lyrically fun and fresh introduction to the album. The Ecstatic is an artistically advanced album, maybe too advanced for some, but definitely utter DOPENESS. Check out the album on IMEEM.

Kobe Bryant

If you've been keeping up with the NBA Finals, you would've witnessed the Magic's pitiful 25-point defeat last night. Anyway, I'm not the biggest NBA expert, but I keep up with what I can when the playoffs start-up. But what has amazed me most is the sports history that I'm witnessing and even it's connection with the hip-hop culture in regards to the [false notion] that you could only make it out of the hood is if you were ballin' or spittin'. But this Weezy joint pays homage to Lakers' star Kobe Bryant expressing that connection but praising it nonetheless. Of course, the two greatest in their profession come from entirely different backgrounds, but I love how hip-hop transcends it all, acknowledging the greatness that is our people.

Charles Hamilton Knock Out

Charles Hamilton getting knocked out by his "oh-girl"

SMH

This is what he had to say:

First, I can't escape how I feel about Briana. I opened my heart to her, and we spiraled where we spiraled. I'm glad that matters of the heart (and fist) is public entertainment (as said with sarcastic smirk), but the fact of the matter is, I LOVE TO NO END. I'm the kind of person that, I told her to hit me HARDER next time. Knock me the f*ck out. I deserved it. I mean, that punch was on behalf of... lol... every Charles Hamilton ex-girlfriend, every rapper I sh1tted on, every teacher that I f*cked with, every cop I harassed... I deserved such abuse.

Love you Mom!

Sometimes you just gotta cut your losses...

Nick Cannon is upset! Eminem went in on Him and Mariah Carey on his new track "Bagpipes From Baghdad"

Well Nick won't havin that. Below is a book length post from his blog talking about destroying Em.

"Well, well, well. Fresh off the plane with my wife from our second honeymoon on the beautiful secluded islands of the Maldives and what do I find in my email box? A mediocre (at best) Eminem record that sounds like it was written in 2001. At first I thought it was old material that had been dug up from when dude “fantasized” about having a pretend fling with Mariah. I was thinking to myself, “Hey that was before me so it is really none of my business, so I’m going to give him a pass.”

So as I continued to semi enjoy Marshall’s rhyme scheme and flow, I mean let’s be honest dude used to be incredible. He was a witty lyrist with dope delivery and timing. Some even say, one of the best to ever do it. I had nothing but respect for this dude. But all of a sudden I hear my name in the verse! My first reaction was like, “This is his new shit??? Wow, that’s too bad…” Then I felt sorry for him because he must really be stuck in the past. Not only has his music not evolved, but also homeboy is still obsessed with my wife, the same female that wouldn’t let him get to second base from 8 years ago! He even describes his desperate lameness in this bad excuse for storytelling track. That’s some real middle school shit right there! (What type of grown ass man lies about getting with a chick) Only Slim Lamey! LOL!

So as I further examine the track, I hear dude cross the line. He begins to call my wife out of her name! Now as y’all know, I don’t take that type of nonsense lightly. So on some grown man shit I’m instantly like, I got to get at this Lame. I know it’s only entertainment and I’m all for freedom of speech. But I’m from the school of thought where if you are tough enough to talk shit, you got to be tough enough to deal with the consequences that come with tough guy shit talking! Then the little angel on my shoulder said, “No Nicholas, there is no need to play into his negativity. He is just a troubled soul yearning for the lost spotlight. You must be Christ like and turn the other cheek”

But then the dude on the other shoulder said, “ What Nigga?! Is you scared?! You can’t let no man ever disrespect your wife! Especially not some Peroxide drenched homophobic has-been! This is like some Paquiao vs. Hatton shit! He is underestimating you with his ass out and you can drop him in the first round!”

Then, without listening to either one of the voices on my shoulders, I analyzed the situation from a logical perspective. Am I going to battle Eminem and try to out rap him? No, that would be stupid. The dude is nice on the mic. Even though nowadays he lacks substance, rapping about when he used to be hot. Like when Al Bundy gloats about his High school football prime.

Then I asked myself should I go find this Bitch and just whoop his little ass? But that might have just been the Creatine and protein shakes talking! LOL. Even though most people don’t know that I’m nice in the ring and have been training in boxing and Martial Arts for years that would just be childish and silly of me to bully this dude. He clearly has been picked on all his life and I would hate to add to his deep-rooted pain. As we all know he has had a hard life and has major insecurity issues and is very confused and unhappy with himself. So a guy like that doesn’t really need another ass whoopin, he needs a hug. We should really pray for his troubled heart.

So just when the good guy in me is about to emerge and shine through, something hits me… Something bigger than rap beefs, something bigger than jealousy infused insults, something bigger than lackluster attention seeking punchlines, something bigger than artistic expression. I realized, that this so-called man has just disrespected and slanderized one of the world’s most significantly influential artists, one of the most notable BLACK females of our time, the incredibly cherished, globally loved and world-embraced woman of color, Mariah Carey!

Some people may not realize or tend to forget that my wife is a Black woman. And she has had enough difficulty in her life dealing with racial and ethnicity issues. Believe it or not, Mariah is the same racial mixture as our beloved president Barack Obama. [Black Father + White Mother= BLACK]

Maybe I’m going too far, but I thought we got passed the days where white men could spew vulgar obscenities at our beautiful queens and get away with it. What’s next? Are we going to let this trash say something horrible about our lovely first lady, Mrs. Michelle Obama? Or would Marshall have talked sideways out of his neck like this about Oprah Winfrey? This act of racist bigotry cannot go unnoticed. Calling my wife a “cunt” and a “whore” is way worse than anything Don Imus could have ever said. So trust, repercussions will be served. Anybody got Al Sharpton’s number?! LOL

Let’s not forget about Eminem’s amateur mixtape rants of calling African Americans Nigger and how he hates “Black Bitches”. How did we let him get away with that in the first place?! He is a natural born racist in disguise. Someone tell this coward that he finally barked up the wrong tree. For his entire career he strategically only tried to beef with people he could bully. I mean, what real man picks fights with women? Real MC’s battle other real MC’s. Ask Nas, ask Jay Z, you didn’t see them starting beefs with women! That is truly some punk shit!

So I’m putting this out there now. Marshall Mathers, you need to holler at me on some grown man shit. Man to man, let’s meet up and deal with this like adults. This is my invitation to you, whenever and wherever you like sir. So when you come out of your introverted hiding place and ask your bodyguards if you can go out and play by yourself, I’m here Pimp!

Your blatant disrespect not just to Black women but ALL women in general must stop. You are a despicable excuse for a man. I can’t even see how you can call yourself a father! Imagine if someone said half the stuff you say about women to your daughter, Hayley. (And I’m pretty sure they will because you got it coming Marshall.) That’s how Karma works.

You sold your little records and made a little bit of change but now you are stepping in the wrong territory. You may have been able to rape and pillage our artform like an old school Caucasian con man and nobody said anything because we respected your talent, but now you’ve made the ultimate mistake. Don’t you know that the black woman is the foundation and the strongest force in our culture? Take notes homey, Elvis would have never disrespected Aretha Franklin or Diana Ross. You were supposed to just do your little song and dance, make your little racist money and call it a day. But no, you had to dishonor the black man’s most precious counterpart.

I’m taking full action on you Eminem. I don’t know why no one has stood up to your bitch ass yet. But I guess it’s going to take a corny, wack rapping, boy toy from Nickelodeon to set you straight. And trust, I am going to be relentless. Even though I got a lot of other obligations and occupations, you are my new full time job “homey”! As a matter of fact I think you going to bring my wack rhymes out of retirement! That’s right haters; you can thank Eminem because I’m going to start rapping again! LOL Just for him! And don’t forget about the jokes! We coming at you hard body!! Non-stop on your Manic-depressive-Insecure-Maclovin-Nazi- Liza Minelli haircut havin-lookin ass!! [Pause] That’s what I do all day Bitch!

So Miss Marshall, I’m going to make you wish you never spoke my name and regret the ungodly things you said about my wife. This is going to be fun! It’s however you want it! Just remember, you did this to yourself! Your legacy has now been tainted from this day forth! You will now be known as the rapper who lost to Corny-ass Nick Cannon!!!"

Nigeria's Hip-Hop Industry Is Booming More Than USA?

Saw this on Worldstarhiphop.com. It's pretty interesting the way Hip Hop has spread globally. I wonder what the chance is for a Nigerian Emcee to gain crossover appeal in the states. I'm sure they would have a built in following what with the immigrants here. Its kinda crazy that they are making a hundred thou a concert when rappers over here struggle to make ten thou for a show. Big Ups to all my Nigerian friends.

Pretty Cool

A Rapper named Nyle takes Weezy's "Let the Beat Build" from the Carter III and turns it into a musical project. Pretty Dope in my humble opinion:

The Roots ft. Chrisette Michelle and Wale- Rising Up (Live)

Saw this on my man Reggie's fbook. A great performance on VH1 from an underrated group:

Chrisette Michelle's Album Epiphany is out now and its fantastic btdubs.

Yet another Reason why I Love Hip Hop.

My friend Vance posted this vid of Jay-z in concert on his facebook. He's doing a tribute to Biggie and Aaliyah (a staple of his concerts which includes Jam Master Jay and Tupac usually too) and the whole stadium knows the words to Biggie's classic "Juicy". This is why I love Hip Hop:

Boom Boom Pow Remix Craziness

So... remixes of Black Eyed Peas' "Boom Boom Pow" have been runnin' wild on the net..... I have my favorite (*cough* *cough* *Cudi* *cough* *cough* lol) but I'll let you be the judge:

Download the Busta Rhymes' version here: http://limelinx.com/files/2bed13b719f033b913e6deda84e8ecf6

P.S. Are artists getting bored? lol I mean the song is ok,but they seem to love it... Gucci Mane, Fatman Scoop and LMFAO all have versions too

Young Keno feat. Lil' Wayne & Lloyd

So, Club Fusion featuring Kaba Modern, BAC, diSiac, Triple 8 and Sympoh was the business! For those of you that weren't there, all of the choreo from all the dance groups was hot but one in particular caught my eye and that was Sympoh's. They danced to "The Things U Do" by Young Keno, Lil' Wayne and LLoyd and the song is FIIIRREEE! Shout out to Brian (I hope that's his name lol) for giving me the name of the song.

POETRY MONTH: Women's Appreciation

This past weekend was BMAG's (Black Men's Awareness Group/Black Men Are Great) [shout out to Genay K.] Annual Women's Appreciation Dinner and in honor to that I thought I'd wrap up poetry month with a couple of poems dedicated to beautiful black women.

The following poem is by the young Aja-Monet, who I had the pleasure to meet a few months back at the Yale Black Solidarity Conference. Still working on her to come down to Princeton, but for now this fly poem about a beautiful young girl should do. You should also check out her blog, she's some type fly.

POETRY MONTH: "Sha-Clack-Clack!"

This past Monday was my second time tutoring at A.C. Wagner Prison over in Borderton New Jersey. The inmates there are extremely bright, and the way I categorize that is by a willingness to learn. I teach writing and have the inmates write short esssays as I look over them and discuss with them what ways to write better; apart from grammar or spelling, I rather have them focus on the content, and I how to get their ideas onto paper, in beautifully descriptive ways.

This experience reminded me of the movie SLAM featuring Saul Williams. Saul Williams plays Ray, a talented MC caught up in the DC prison system. In his time in prison he meets a woman named Lauren, who teaches English at the prison. Ray, not realizinig his full potential through his lyricism struggles between the rights and wrongs of the Dodge City Projects, aiming to find his way. The following is a clip at the end of the movie. I recommend y'all rent it.

However, one of the things that did bother in my time there, is the way they ask for the tutors to treat the inmates. They asked that we be professional and that we should be reminded that we are dealing with criminals. If you ask me, I refuse to treat people as if they are less than what they should be or have the potential to be. I chose writing because I honestly believe that my time there will make a difference. If you think it's THE GAME that got them caught up in this system, I can tell you THE GAME can get you out. Write It. Think It. Believe It.

Damn Chingy...SMH, UPDATE: Chingy Responds

UPDATE: Chingy Responds

Saw this video on Bossip today:

A Transsexual rapper named Foxxjazell calls into this radio show and basically puts Chingy, famous for "Right Thurr" and "One Call Away" on blast, going as far as to say Chingy was the "receiver" in their relationship. Whatever floats your boat, I'm not casting any stones here, but why lie about how your getting it in...

Is Foxxjazell just tryna get publicity? I don't know. File this under Rumors/News?
